Derek Ferguson has been left fuming at the Rangers penalty howler as he fired out a risque joke by claiming the bumbling VAR pair behind the Hampden debacle were ‘pulling each others crackers’.

The fallout from the six-goal thriller at Hampden has all been focussed on one key decision with head of refereeing Willie Collum branding the decision ‘unacceptable’ to not award a penalty for Liam Scales’ tackle on Vaclav Cerny. The full audio exchange from Clydesdale House has been made public today with the Ibrox side insisting the call from Alan Muir and Frank Connor is ‘damaging for the credibility of Scottish football’ in a stinging statement.

Brendan Rodgers and his troops went on to lift the Premier Sports Cup after a penalty shootout win over Philippe Clement’s men. The match ended 3-3 after 90 minutes with the score remaining the same by the end of an additional 30 minutes. It all came down to penalties with Kasper Schmeichel the hero as he denied Ridvan Yilmaz with the crucial save.

However, days on from the final the penalty row rumbles on and it is one that will no doubt continue for days and weeks yet. Pundits, ex-pros and everyone else has had their say on the incident and it was the turn of Ibrox hero Ferguson while on Open Goal. He has branded it embarrassing while he popped at the VAR pair with a Christmas cracker after dark joke to keep the debate going.

He said: “What were they doing? Come on! It is not about shouting. If you look at John Beaton you can see his point of view. He is unsure. That is what the VAR are there for. The two of them are sitting at their screens so any incident around the box, they should be looking at that right away.

“Daz [Gordon Dalziel] has just described it, it is a foul, it is inside the box, it is a penalty. So what were they doing? Where they having a Christmas party and pulling each others crackers? What were they doing? It is quite embarrassing.”
