(CNN) – Tom Cruise’s work on the big screen got him recognized by the U.S. military.
The actor was presented with the Distinguished Public Service Award, which is the U.S. Navy’s top civilian honor.

Officials say Cruise made outstanding contributions to the Marine Corps and the Navy for his roles in films, including the “Top Gun” series and “A Few Good Men.”
U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos del Toro presented the medal to Cruise, who said he was proud of the “extraordinary acknowledgment.”
Cruise, 62, returns to movie theaters next May with “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.”
