A mum has told how her daughter has been left “traumatised” after discovering a hidden camera filming hundreds of naked girls in her school.
The parent, who we can only name as Emma, spoke to the Record after a teenage boy was charged over the incident at a Dundee high school on Tuesday, December 17.
We reported yesterday that the girl found the phone inside a toilet roll holder and immediately alerted staff at the school.
Speaking to the Record, Emma explained how her daughter has been left badly shaken by the incident and is now refusing to go back to school following the horror discovery.
She said: “My daughter had excused herself from class and went to the toilet, but while she was in there a black object caught her eye within the toilet roll holder.
“She realised it was a phone and pulled it out but noticed it was videoing her and had been recording for about 15 minutes beforehand.
“She panicked, quickly deleted the video of her on the toilet and ran back to class and gave the phone to her teacher, who then passed it on to the head teacher.
“The school phoned to tell me what had happened and I was beyond furious, but obviously more than anything else I was devastated that this happened to my daughter.
“My daughter told me that she looked at the camera roll and there were hundreds of videos and images of girls naked in changing rooms and using the toilet.
“I got her home from school that afternoon and she was extremely traumatised by it all. She has been in a state since then and is completely refusing to go back to school.“
The school has unisex toilets and Emma has now slammed Dundee City Council over a lack of single-sex sanitary facilities, which she believes is putting young girls at risk.
She continued: “School is meant to be the one place where we can send our children and know that they are safe but where is the safeguarding when this can happen?
“If it wasn’t for the mixed toilets then this just would never have happened.
“This is something that a lot of parents have been concerned about for a number of years and since I spoke out about what happened to my daughter, loads of people have come forward and agreed that unisex toilets are huge issue.
“This boy would simply not have had access to the girls toilets otherwise.
“I will be looking for assurances from the council that they are going to do something to make sure our children are safe before I even consider sending my daughter back to that school.”
Emma said she has contacted the council, but it has refused to discuss the matter further with her due to it being a live police investigation.
Officers from the force visited Emma and her daughter on Tuesday night and took the girl’s DNA so they could exclude it from samples taken from the phone.
Emma then claims cops confirmed that a high number of victims are involved in the incident, leaving the mum shocked to her core.
She added: “The officers told me that there were hundreds of images and videos of little girls on the phone, all naked or partly undressed in different toilets and changing rooms.
“The police are now are trying to identify all these young girls and let their parents know. That’s hundreds of families this is going to affect.
“I just want other parents to know what is going on in schools in Scotland these days and for them to get their children to check everywhere for hidden devices.
“Thankfully my daughter spotted this phone but what would have happened if she didn’t? These images could have been sent everywhere and they would have been out there on the internet forever.
“What happened to my daughter is bad enough, but it is horrible to even think about the lasting damage if she hadn’t discovered the phone.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.35pm on Tuesday, 17 December, 2024 we received a report of voyeurism at a premises in Dundee. A 15-year-old male youth was charged in connection and a report will be submitted to the Youth Justice Assessor.”
A Dundee City Council Spokesperson said: “It would be inappropriate to comment on an ongoing police matter.”
