(Gray News) – Baseball Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson has died at the age of 65, according to several reports.
Henderson, Major League Baseball’s career steals leader, is widely considered to be one of the greatest leadoff hitters and base stealers in baseball history, according to Sports Illustrated.
His former teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Dave Winfield confirmed Henderson’s death in an Instagram post.
“I still cannot believe I’ve lost one of my favorite teammates and great friend Rickey Henderson,” he said in a post. “Rest in peace.”
The Athletics said Saturday they were “shocked and heartbroken by his passing.” The team did not specify a cause of death.
Sports Illustrated reported Henderson compiled 3,055 hits, 297 home runs and 1,115 RBI in his 25-year career. He still holds the MLB records for most career runs and stolen bases with 2,295 career runs and 1,406 stolen bases.
According to Newsweek, Henderson played 14 of his 25 major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics, his hometown team.
He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009.
