A school’s Christmas Nativity play sparked fits of laughter for one parent, upon discovering the unusual roles their offspring would portray.

Staging these festive plays is a common tradition across UK schools, with numerous parts, leading to inventive role assignments. A parent was tickled pink by an email from the school about her children’s parts and shared it on Twitter/X.

Emma Szewczak posted: “Nativity season is upon us! My son has been cast as a wise man. My daughter, on the other hand…” and attached an email from the school.

The accompanying email stated: “Good afternoon. We have started preparations for our nativity! We are all really looking forward to seeing it come together and know your child will be excited, too!

“Your child has been cast as a door. This role will be interactive. Their costumes can be purchased or created at home using things such as cardboard and string to create a sandwich board style door for them to pop over their head.”

Other users on Twitter/X were quick to revel in the humour, offering suggestions to modernise this distinctive character. “Make sure it has a ring camera,” wrote one, to which Emma responded enthusiastically: “Omg I’m definitely doing this.”

One user suggested a different approach to the costume, proposing their child should dress up as “Jim Morrison,” the lead singer of The Doors. Another quipped: “At least that’s an interactive role. I was a tree.”

Meanwhile other members of the public shared their own amusing Christmas costumes, with roles ranging from the rear end of camels to wardrobe doors.

One person commented: “Haha. My daughter was once part of the door in ‘The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe’, so I definitely sympathise with her…” Another added: “My brother was the back end of a camel.”

Another added: “My brother was the back end of a camel.” A third user who loved the post revealed: “I am crying laughing. As someone who was once cast as the pea in Princess and the Pea… I feel your daughter :).”

Emma, an author at Chatto Books, added: “I do not know why ‘a door’ is so funny but I literally sobbed with laughter.” She has since revealed her plans to create “the most elaborate door in history” for her daughter’s school nativity.
