Lanarkshire Philatelic Society’s final meeting of 2024 had a suitably festive theme.
“Christmas” was the title and members responded with a variety of views.
Colourful postcards with joyful Christmas greetings were displayed by Gordon Shepherd, while Maureen Mathieson showed covers illustrating the 12 days of Christmas.
Elsie Miller showed the variable view of ethnic Christmas according to the circumstances of the country– for example, in Kiribati there are no sheep so herdsmen of pigs were greeted by the angels.
The fascinating story of the Christkindl Post Office in Austria, which opens each year through the Christmas period, with special Christkindl postmarks issued, was told by Frederick Spoun.
Caroline Watt moved forward to the New Year and beautifully displayed embroidered cards that soldiers sent to families and friends during World War I.
A presentation closer to home was the interesting view of the changing postmark of Bothwell from 1828 to 1902, presented by Terry Woods.
Walter Simpson, expressed thanks to all for their presentations.
The next meeting of the group, held in Hamilton’s Caledonian Bowling Club, will take place on January 10 at 1.30pm.
Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history or postcards is very welcome to attend.
