Shotts boss John McKeown was furious with his side for failing to master the conditions in the capital on Saturday, as Civil Service Strollers knocked them out of the South Challenge Cup at the last 16 stage.

The Bonny went down 3-0 to the Lowland Leagues side in Edinburgh and McKeown was left making a familiar complaint about his side failing to take their chances.

And he said: “The conditions were one of the worst I’ve seen as a manager, in terms of the wind. It was an absolute spoiler.

“But, fair play to Civil Service, they dealt with it better than us. They used the wind well in the first half and got a 2-0 lead after we had missed three one-on-ones.

“They took their chances in the game and we didn’t.

“The first goal is sloppy from us, the second was a worldie into the top corner from 35 yards – I think it was probably wind-assisted – but at half-time we felt like we could still have a go at them with the winds at our backs.

“But we never really started well at all and we gave away a cheap goal for them to go 3-0 up.

“After that, they just stopped us and spoiled the game so fair play to them. They were a hard-working young side, whereas we were sloppy in possession and missed chances, which isn’t good enough.

“I’m quite angry because it feels like we just gave up too many opportunities to score.

“That’s been a bit of a pattern recently and we can’t be doing that.

“We missed loads of chances against Cumnock and Hurlford in the league and today as well. It is starting to catch up with us.”

That was The Bonny’s final game of the year as they now go into cold storage until Saturday, January 4 when they welcome Royal Albert to Hannah Park for a West of Scotland Cup third round tie.

McKeown added: “We’ll keep the boys ticking over.

“We will have them in training during the break and play some bounce games amongst ourselves.

“We’ve got Royal Albert in the West Cup when we come back, but the boys will need to make sure they have their shooting boots on if they want to progress in the cup and climb up the [Premier] league table.

“We are passing up far too many opportunities right now.”
