AUSTIN, Texas — On Christmas Eve, volunteers with Meals On Wheels of Central Texas spread some holiday cheer by delivering thousands of meals to seniors in need.
Lucia Dodson with her grandchildren spread holiday cheer on their Meals on Wheels route delivering meals and a holiday card to client Hilda Garcia.
“Her reaction … I love her reaction so talkative, very friendly and loving,” Dodson said. “I think of her as family. When she’s not at home, I worry, I call, and afterward, I call again to make sure I know she is ok.”
Garcia said she is grateful for the food, as she said times are tough with the cost of living.
“They lowered my food stamps down. It’s hard, food prices are sky high, and the meals don’t last all the time,” Garcia said. “I said, ‘Meals On Wheel thank you for bringing me a meal because at least that helps me.'”She said she is thankful for the love the volunteers bring.”I have good relations with all of them, chatting with all of them. I enjoy their company. It gives me someone to talk to,” Garcia said.
Meals on Wheels said around 3,000 meals were distributed by 250 volunteers.
