The cost of cooking Christmas dinner has soared by 44 per cent in the last five years, the SNP has said.
The Nationalists said that in 2019, cooking an average sized turkey in a 2kWh oven would’ve cost £1.19. In 2024 this has gone up to £1.72.
The SNP has argued this huge increase in the cost of electricity highlights the necessity for Scotland to have control over its own electricity resources.
SNP MSP Bob Doris said: “The shocking 44% rise in the cost of cooking a Christmas dinner since 2019 is the price that Scots are paying for Westminster mismanagement of Scotland’s immense energy resources.
“Scotland generates 15.5% of the UK’s electricity, despite having only 8.2% of the UK’s population – and yet, because of Westminster’s continual mismanagement of Scotland’s resources, Scots continue to pay some of the highest energy bills in Europe.
“Before the election, Labour promised to cut energy bills by £300 – but in reality, they’ve gone up by £470 since they came to power. And they’re going to increase even further in January.
“The only way to ensure that Scots get a fair deal on electricity, that reflects our country’s massive electricity surplus, is with independence.”
The figures based on customers on a default tariff paying by direct debit cooking an average size turkey in a 2kwh oven for three and a half hours. The Average direct debit variable unit price (£/kWh) in 2019 was 17p in 2024 it is 24.5p.
A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson said:
“Every family and business in the country has paid the price of Britain’s dependence on global fossil fuel markets.
“The clean power mission is the solution to this crisis. By sprinting to clean, homegrown energy, the UK can take back control of its energy with cleaner, affordable power.
“We are doing everything we can to support vulnerable families this winter – including through the £150 Warm Home Discount, which is expected to support three million eligible households.”
