A cocker spaniel found in a carrier bag in a town centre is spending Christmas Day with the police officer who rescued her. PC Courtney Tongue has found herself a new companion in Bella after receiving the call from a distressed woman in Walsall.

Later given permission to adopt the pup, the officer is now celebrating as Bella triumphs in dog shows and has even met Santa Claus, alongside Courtney’s other dog Bobby. Courtney shared: “I have to admit I fell in love with Bella as soon as she was handed to me.”

Lovingly noting Bella’s progress, she added: “She was tiny, underweight and hadn’t had a good start in life.”

Detailing her decision, Courtney said, “I decided there and then that I would look after her, and after making the necessary checks I was given the go-ahead to adopt Bella.”

She spoke of Bella’s transformation, remarking: “She has grown in confidence so much over the last few months. She is so full of life, loves to fuss people and loves her toys.”

Courtney described Bella as “She is a live wire that’s for sure. She has bundles of energy now and loves the garden.”

Bella now enjoys a spirited life, playing in the garden and showing an affection for water. “She also loves water as I’m finding out with her water bowl as she tries to swim in it.

“She loves to roll around in the water and also loves to dig a hole. She loves her toys and is never really without one.”

Bella has taken to agility classes where she’s been awarded rosettes.

Reflecting on their visit back to the station, Courtney expressed: “It was great to bring her back to see the officers again who had fussed over her when she was first brought in, and helped to pay for her vet bills and for her to be micro-chipped.

“She even had a little present waiting for her which she opened. I am really looking forward to spending my first Christmas with Bella and she has lots of toys waiting for her. I am hoping it will be really special.”
