Dozens of hardy souls kicked off their Christmas celebrations with a polar plunge at a Scots beach.

Ladies from the Tidal Titties sea swimming braved the wintry elements to take a dip at Portobello Beach, near Edinburgh.

Whilst most families were cosying up on the couch the women dashed into the freezing waters of the Firth of Forth.

The group dressed for the occasion as they donned festive Santa-coloured swimsuits and festive hats, while others sported cowboy hats.

Pictures show the group full of festive cheer as they splashed in the water.

Although the Christmas Day forecast was well above the usual freezing conditions on the east coast, the sea would still have been a chilly 7 degrees.

But the ladies of varying ages seemed unfazed by the cool waters as they shared a laugh and got into the party spirit.

Locals, Emma Harrison-Teig , Abi Harrison-Teig and Vikki Bruce from Portobello were spotted enjoying the surf.

Another picture shows a large group of revellers on the sandy shore as they all gathered for a Christmas morning selfie.

Other ladies locked arms and danced in a can-can style as they made a splash.
