A number of big movie sequels are expected to be added to Netflix in 2025 but chances are that even the most dedicated fan have forgotten they’re just around the corner.
Most of these titles are yet to receive a firm release date but all are expected some time within the next year.
From long awaited follow-ups to delayed releases and sequels to some of the biggest film releases on the platform, here are some Netflix viewers look forward to in 2025 and one perhaps a little way further along the road.
The Old Guard 2
The follow up to the Charlize Theron starring superhero, action film was actually expected in 2024. The first film, adapted from the comic book of the same name, and with a screenplay written by the same author, it has hit some production issues. Theron admitted she wanted a little ‘resting time’ after the first title but was keen to work on a follow up.
It was greenlit by Netflix in 2021 and gained a new director. While filming was reported to have been finished back in 2022, some additional shooting was apparently needed and took place in October this year. Netflix kept the film from any advertisements teasing 2024 releases but the hope remains that it will eventually be released in 2025.
Happy Gilmore 2
Adam Sandler’s Netflix collection grows bigger each year with a wide range of critical success. From the far from sublime Murder Mystery to the exceptional thriller Uncut Gems, with a poignant return to stand-up special available on the streaming platform to throw in to boot.
The next collaboration between the comic actor and the company is a sequel of one of Sandler’s most beloved hits from the 1990s. Images have been shared from the Happy Gilmore set earlier in the year, including co-star Ben Stiller in character. Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen are also billed to reprise their roles from the original. Happy Gilmore 2 is expected to hit the streamer in summer 2025.
The Gray Man 2
This one might be a little further away from a release date than 2025. The original Gray Man was an action film that reunited the Russo brothers with former Captain America Chris Evans. They were joined by Ryan Gosling as Evans plays a disgraced former CIA agent-turned-mercenary, hired to take down Gosling’s convict-turned-CIA agent.
While not well received critically, it at least found some love among Netflix fans and has a 90% popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Joe Russo confirmed that a follow up was still in the works earlier this year. However, he and his sibling also agreed to go back to the Marvel cinematic Universe to helm two more Avengers movies so who knows when they will get round to finishing production.
Troll 2
The first Troll still holds the title of the biggest non-English Netflix original movie on the service. No surprise that less than a year after its original 2022 release, the streamer signalled the go-ahead on a sequel for the Norwegian monster movie, loved by fans of movies such as Godzilla and King Kong.
It was stated that production was underway as of November this year and fans are told to expect to be able to watch it sometime in 2025. Director Roar Uthaug had his follow up to the 2018 release Tomb Raider cancelled so is expected to have turned all his attention onto Troll 2.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
Netflix signed up director Rian Johnson to a lucrative deal following the immense commercial and critical success of the original Knives Out, which was labelled by fans as one of the best murder mysteries ever made. Netflix’s deal saw the sequel, Glass Onion have a limited cinema release before landing on the streamer around Christmas time in 2022.
The third instalment will see Daniel Craig return yet again as Detective Benoit Blanc to investigate a brand new mystery. Titled Wake Up Dead Man, the follow up will once again feature a star studded cast including Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis.
