When it comes to holiday planning, there’s a lot to consider – from ensuring your suitcase isn’t overweight to leaving ample time for security checks. Luggage often becomes a stress point, given the varying size and weight restrictions set by different airlines, not to mention the steep charges for exceeding these limits.

However, 1st Move International removals experts have highlighted another common luggage blunder that could result in lost bags. They advise travellers to remove old airline stickers and tags from their luggage, as neglecting to do so can confuse airport staff and potentially lead to misplaced baggage.

To avoid this, ensure all tags from previous flights are removed so your luggage is correctly identified and easily tracked if it goes astray. The experts also suggest including a paper copy of your details and travel itinerary inside your suitcase, as luggage tags can sometimes fall off or get damaged during transit.

This way, airline staff can reunite you with your belongings more quickly should they go missing.

When it comes to luggage tags, opt for one that’s robust, easily visible and unique – and ensure your details are current. This will minimise the likelihood of fellow travellers confusing your suitcase for theirs, reports the Mirror.

For added peace of mind, you might want to pop a GPS luggage tracker in your case, so you can keep tabs on its location from your mobile. Another factor to bear in mind is the nature of your trip.

If you’re flying with a lot of checked-in luggage, it’s best to go for direct flights where possible. The majority of baggage losses happen on international flights, particularly those with stopovers during peak times, due to the heightened risk of transferring luggage between planes.

To mitigate this risk, aim to book direct flights. If a stopover can’t be avoided, choose a longer one, giving staff more time to move your luggage and lessening the chance of errors.
