Jimmy Thelin hopes Aberdeen’s hammering at Killie is a rock bottom for their imploding season.

The Dons boss pointed a finger at his players for failing to compete in the basics as they made it seven games without a win, slumping to an embarrassing 4-0 defeat in Ayrshire. It’s a freefall from the heights of the earlier part of this campaign and the Swede insists a repeat of the Rugby Park capitulation won’t be tolerated. Thelin, who ordinarily gives very little away, honestly admitted: “It is not acceptable how we performed. How we competed with Kilmarnock was not good enough. Kilmarnock do their thing really well. But we have to compete more.

“Hopefully, this was the worst performance for the season. You can win, lose or draw games – but not the way we did today with the effort we made for each other. It’s not good enough. You can get in a really bad run and we haven’t won for some games now. But at least compete. Today Kilmarnock won every duel, they won every second ball and then it’s not easy to win games. I’m a part of this, I’m the coach. We have to look ourselves in the mirror and do much, much better in the next game.

“It’s on Sunday away at Dundee United and we have to perform much better than we did today. I talked with my players in the dressing room. Right now, we need to stick together and come back with better effort. No one can hide. There is nothing other way. We have to stick together and with much more energy and belief. We have to do the basics.”
