Bin men in Edinburgh were forced to dump a lorry load of rubbish in the middle of the street after their vehicle caught fire.
Fire crews raced to the scene on Lochrin Place, near Tollcross, Edinburgh, after the alarm was raised at around 1.30pm on Friday, December 27. Images from the scene, shared with Edinburgh Live, show a huge pile of rubbish in the middle of the street.
It’s understood a small fire took hold of the back of the bin lorry sparking the incident. Workers were forced to act fast and empty the load to prevent the blaze from spreading. Colleagues later arrived with another van to help clean up the rubbish.
Fire crews attended and the blaze was extinguished less than an hour later. A passer-by said: “I was just walking past and noticed the huge pile of rubbish on the street. There were several bin men next to the lorry and another waste van opposite so I asked one of the men and he said they had to dump their load as the bin lorry was on fire.”
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call at 1.30pm to reports of a bin lorry on fire on Lochrin Place, Edinburgh. Two pump appliances were mobilised to the scene and the fire was extinguished by 14.15pm.”
