Paulo Fonseca has been sacked by AC Milan after just six months in charge following last night’s 1-1 home draw with Roma.
The Italian heavyweights have endured a miserable campaign and languish eighth in the Serie A table – a staggering 14 points adrift of joint-top Atalanta and Napoli. Despite their domestic woes, Milan have performed well in the Champions League, where they sit 12th having lost two and won four of their six matches so far.
Former Lille boss Fonseca replaced 2022 title-winning gaffer Stefano Pioli in the San Siro hotseat in June but the club have now confirmed his departure. A statement read: “AC Milan announces that Paulo Fonseca has been relieved from his duties as Head Coach of the Men’s First Team. The Club extends its gratitude to Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours.”
According to multiple reports, the seven-time European champions have already lined up a successor for Fonseca. Various sources in Italy say that ex-Porto boss Sergio Conceicao has already agreed to take over until the end of the season and is expected to arrive in Milan today, where he could be paraded.
The 50-year-old – who played for rivals Inter – could even be in the dugout to face Juventus in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Italian Super Cup on January 3. That would see him come up against his own son, Francisco Conceicao, who is currently on loan at Juve from Porto.
