Former Newcastle defender Michael Newberry, who was previously hailed as one of the club’s “brightest talents” as a youngster, has died suddenly at the age of just 27.
His club, Belfast-based Cliftonville, which he only joined this summer, confirmed the news in a statement today. He previously featured for fellow Northern Irish club Linfield in a successful three-year spell, winning two Irish Premiership titles.
Both teams have announced their upcoming games against Dungannon Swifts and Larne have been postponed respectively, reports the Mirror.

The statement from Cliftonville read: “Our condolences are extended to Michael’s family and friends, as well as the many team-mates he played with during his career, and fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news. Rest in peace, Newbs.”
Linfield added: “Linfield FC is devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our former player, Michael Newberry.
“Linfield has agreed with NIFL that tonight’s Premiership game against Larne should be postponed. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michael’s family and friends at this very sad time.”
A spokesperson for the NI Football League also issued a statement in tribute, which read: “Everyone connected with the NI Football League pass on our heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family, friends and everyone connected with Cliftonville Football Club at this sad time.”
Newberry joined Newcastle at the age of 11, and was hailed as one of its “brightest talents”, receiving the Wor Jackie trophy in recognition of his ability as a young player.
His career also included playing for Northern Ireland’s Under-21 side, and a spell with Icelandic side Vikingur Olafsvik in 2018.
