The children were transported after the fire started around 2 a.m. on Dec. 31, according to the Austin Fire Department.

AUSTIN, Texas — At least four children were taken to a hospital after a fire early Tuesday morning in South Austin.

The fire started around 2 a.m. at the iConic South 1st apartments, located on 4313 S. 1st St. near West St. Elmo Road, according to the Austin Fire Department (AFD).

Responders said they saw flames coming from a unit before they began evacuating nearby residents.

AFD said it was able to stop the fire at the first four apartments, but that roughly 12 units were damaged to some extent. It’s uncertain how many residents are currently unable to return to their homes.

No serious injuries were reported, and all four children were transported for smoke inhalation.

Arson investigators are currently on scene, but no additional information is available at this time.
