MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. – Leaders with the Federal Emergency Management Agency are hoping to warn people about potential scammers looking to take advantage of their presence in Mercer County.

Leaders with FEMA tell WVVA it’s not uncommon for scammers to target people affected by natural disasters. FEMA officials want to emphasize that they will never ask people for money in order to provide them with assistance.

They add that scammers have been known to wear clothing with FEMA signifiers, but you can determine if someone is actually legit or not by asking for their FEMA ID.

“You can get fraudulent phone calls. You can have people come to your door. You can even have people registering under your name and if you know that you have not registered for FEMA as well then you can call us and let us know that this is not you,” said Tiana Suber, FEMA spokeswoman.

Suber adds that residents should also be weary of people posing as contracts offering repair services in exchange for money up front.
