WEST VIRGINIA – West Virginia’s Fall fire season is ending on Dec. 31. Starting in the new year you can burn any natural debris during any time of the day.

West Virginia’s Fall burning law runs from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 and only permits burning from 5 pm to 7 am.

Firefighters are urging people to still burn cautiously no matter the circumstances. If you’re planning on burning any debris it has to be natural material like brush or leaves.

They say you should not burn furniture or trash due to toxic carcinogens released into the air. Fires should have plenty of distance from anything flammable such as houses or trees.

Fires are required to have at least a ten feet radius of non-combustible material to insure fires do not spread.

It’s also a good idea to have water on stand by and avoid burning on windy days.

“You might want to try to just postpone it to where it’s not very windy. If there’s any questions to different burn bans or anything like that you should just call your local fire department and they’ll let you know the risk factors,” said Eric Six, firefighter for the City of Princeton.

Six says you should never leave fires unattended. The West Virginia Division of Forestry says if your fire does escape you are liable for the costs of fighting the fire and any damages the fire causes to others.

West Virginia’s spring burning law begins on March 1 and will run through May 31.
