This leads them on a thrilling quest to find the hidden fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a 17th-century pirate, reports the Mirror. However, their adventure is complicated by a family of criminals also seeking the treasure.

Upon its release, The Goonies was a box office success, raking in $125 million against a $19 million budget. It was well-received by critics and has since become a beloved classic, with fans returning to it time and again.

In 2017, the film earned a spot in the United States National Film Registry, with the Library of Congress recognising it as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” and thus bestowing upon it an esteemed accolade.

The movie has garnered affection from audiences over time. A critic on Rotten Tomatoes remarked: “To this day, I still quote this movie. It’s hard not to love this movie.”

Another shared their thoughts saying: “Goonies is an entertaining film and has a cult following of teens from the ’80s, who remember the film well. Adults will enjoy watching it with their children, since it’s a more subdued family film than what comes out today.”

Meanwhile, one fan wrote: “The Goonies may have been released three and a half decades ago but it stands the test of time.”

Another fan compared it to adventure movies like E.T and Star Wars, writing: “The Goonies is and will always be an iconic adventures movie equal to others like Indiana Jones, Star Wars and E.T. in the 80’s era. While obviously over the top the overall story and fantastic cast gave it the endearing touch that few movies today could ever reach.”

The film will be broadcast on Sunday (January 5) at 1:40pm on ITV1 and again an hour later at 2:40pm on ITV1+1. For those unable to catch it live, it will be available for streaming on ITVX at a later date.
