Brighton diehards were left stunned when eye-catching Matt O’Riley was hauled off after just 45 minutes against Arsenal – as boss Fabian Hurzeler was vindicated after his side stormed back in style.
The 31-year-old German was looking to shake up his Seagulls and boldly removed the £25million and rising former Celtic star at the break for Georginio Rutter. And the left-field approach paid off for Brighton as they pinned Mikel Arteta’s side back before Joao Pedro scored from the spot after winning the penalty.
One incensed Brighton fan branded the chance to sub O’Riley as ‘incomprehensible’. However, Brighton found a verve and swagger in the second half that was missing. O’Riley earned plaudits from commentator Alan Smith who talked up his ability to create opportunities for his team-mates. Brighton have earned a draw in their past four Premier League games and now Arsenal have been left needing snookers in the race for the title.
