RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – It may seem like driving 101, but you can never be too cautious in slick and icy conditions.
According to AAA, more than 2,000 road deaths occur every winter, so drivers should be aware of safety rules when dealing with winter road emergencies.
“Avoid any quick or abrupt stopping that’s critical; allowing extra space between your vehicle or any other vehicle can be a preventative measure to keep from having or being involved in a crash or accident,” said Helen Dugger, driving instructor at Blessed Driving School.
She says drivers should remember to keep both hands on the wheel at the eight and four positions. This helps maintain control of the car if you feel your car sliding. You’ll also want to ensure you don’t slam on the breaks, which she says is the worst thing you can do.
Dugger says that if you find yourself in a skid, gently steer the car in the direction you’re skidding and then gently turn the wheel in the direction you want it to go.
“Do not overreact or overcorrect,” said Dugger. “Don’t do it abruptly or quickly; you want to do it gently.”
You should also remember to use your headlights but not your high beams. Dugger says high beams in the snow could cause glare for other drivers.
