ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – With slick road conditions, Virginia State Police are urging people to stay off the roads as much as possible as they have responded to over 300 crashes throughout our region since Sunday afternoon.

Since 12 p.m. Sunday, Virginia State Police say there have been over 600 wrecks across the Commonwealth.

304 of those crashes happened in the areas of Salem, Wytheville, and Appomattox.

“Those were primarily in our Salem district and our Wytheville district, and that’s because that’s where the storm came in first,” said Matthew Demlein, Virginia State Police Spokesperson.

While at least 20 crashes in our area have involved injuries, we’re told none have been fatal.

They say the roads with the most crashes were major interstates like I-81, I-64 and I-77.

Additional state troopers are on the roads who have been working 12-hour shifts since Sunday.

“We went to 12-hour shifts yesterday to be able to respond to the storm. We’ve increased the number of troopers out on the roads so that we can respond to any and all crashes that occur,” added Demlein.

VSP says Interstate 81 from Montgomery to Augusta County is now in good condition. The current challenges are the primary and secondary roads.

Virginia State Police are urging people to stay home if possible until crews can clear the roads.

“You have rain, sleet, snow, so the roads are slick and that is going to cause problems. If you don’t have to be out on the roads, don’t be out on the roads. If you can stay home do so. Make it easier for V-DOT to do the job that they do and get the roads clean,” explained Demlein.

The vehicles involved in crashes on I-81 have been left in place until the storm event is over. VSP says they will be removed during a time that has a minimal impact on traffic.
