VIRGINIA . (WDBJ) – A water crisis in Richmond is not only causing headaches for thousands, but it’s forcing the Virginia legislative session to readjust.
Both the Virginia House and Senate announced they will convene at 12 p.m. on Wednesday to start the session, then recess until Monday, January. 13.
Governor Glenn Youngkin will now give his State of the Commonwealth Address on Monday morning. 2025 is an election year, meaning it’s Youngkin’s final year in his term.
Youngkin says his priorities with this budget include tax relief, increasing educational opportunities, keeping communities safe, healthcare, economic development and the Commonwealth’s technology infrastructure.
He’s working with an additional $4.7 billion to carry out his plans.
“It’s also important to remember this is an election year. With such a positive surplus, it actually gives republicans some elements for their fall campaigns, both at the top of the ticket and also in terms of the delegate races. So, in some ways his particular budget and issues becomes a platform for the republicans to run in the fall. With so much surplus funds, it may be difficult for democrats to fight some of them. I anticipate some of them will join and support some of his initiatives,” said Dr. Bob Denton, WDBJ7’s Political Analyst.
Youngkin’s plans also include improving I-81 in our area to make it safer and expanding a runway at the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport.
