WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – The Nation is remembering former President Jimmy Carter, the man born on a peanut farm in Plains, Georgia.

The Georgia native is currently lying in state at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

Official and local Washington remembers Jimmy Carter as a humanitarian, a veteran, a man of God and the 39th president of the United States.

The familiar blue and white Air Force plane, known best for ferrying the president around the world took the lead for transport. From Joint Base Andrews to the Navy Memorial, where the casket was transferred to a horse-drawn caisson, Jimmy Carter’s casket was brought to the United States Capitol. During an afternoon prayer service, national leaders admired a man from humble beginnings who became the leader of the free world.

Vice President Kamala Harris noted, “A man from Plains, Georgia, who grew up without electricity or running water, and served as the 39th president.”

Carter leaves a legacy as much more than just a president. From his military service to his work for Habitat for Humanity and the creation of the Carter Center, eulogies at the Capitol pointed out Carter’s achievements and actions were consistently guided by his faith.

Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) is now the leader of the Senate Rpublicans, “Sunday school teacher. Nobel prize winner. An advocate for peace and human rights. And first and foremost, a faithful servant of his creator and his fellow man.”

As president, Carter was known as a peacemaker, an advocate for tax cuts, deregulation, and conservation.

As a person he was known for helping others.

Speaker of the House Representatives Mike Johnson (R-La.) highlighting Carter’s Christian faith.

“His care for humanity did not stop at building homes. In the face of illness, President Jimmy Carter brought life-saving medicine. In the face of conflict, he brokered peace, in the face of discrimination, he reminded us that we are all made in the image of God.”

Carter’s casket will remain in the U.S. Capitol until his funeral at the National Cathedral Thursday.
