All post office locations will be closed and regular mail delivery will be suspended on Jan. 9 in honor of former President Jimmy Carter. However, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) says it will provide limited package delivery service that day.
“President Joseph R. Biden has declared Jan. 9, 2025, as a national day of mourning, calling on Americans to remember the vast contributions of former President Jimmy Carter,” the USPS says on its website. “To honor the life and legacy of President Carter, the Postal Service will observe the national day of mourning.”
In addition to post office closures, federal courts, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq’s U.S. markets will be closed. All executive departments and federal agencies will also be closed, except those necessary for “national security, defense, or other public need,” according to Biden’s executive order.
After observances in his native Georgia over the weekend, Carter’s remains were transported from the Carter Presidential Center to the Washington, D.C. area on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Vice President Kamala Harris and members of Congress gathered to honor the former president in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, where his body will lie in state through Wednesday.
On Jan. 9, Biden will deliver a eulogy at Carter’s state funeral at the National Cathedral. Following the service, Carter will return to Plains, Georgia, where he will be laid to rest beside his late wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who died in 2023.
