People worried about energy debt are being encouraged by an Ayrshire MSP to seek the help available.

Siobhian Brown, MSP for Ayr, Prestwick and Troon has highlighted support available from the British Gas Energy Trust and the Warm Homes Discount.

The move comes after the recent cold snap which has seen a spate of snow and ice warnings across Ayrshire and temperatures as low as -6C recorded.

Through the British Gas Energy Trust, those eligible can get up to £2,000 to help write off their energy debt. In addition, the company works with its partners to provide fuel vouchers to assist in meeting heating costs.

The Warm Home Discount is a £150 grant that you can apply for if you are on a low income and vulnerable people can enrol in the Priority Services Register which offers additional help.

SNP MSP Ms Brown attended a Warm Homes event at the Scottish Parliament, where she spoke to Scottish Gas representatives about the help they can provide those struggling.

Commenting, Ms Brown said: “If you are struggling with energy debt, the first step is to ask for help. Support is available, and it’s vital that people know there are services like the British Gas Energy Trust ready to help ease this burden.

“The British Gas Energy Trust initiative is designed to provide critical assistance to those facing financial pressure, particularly during the colder months when heating costs can rise. With many families finding it difficult to cope with escalating energy bills, I want to remind people that help is out there.”
