Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has said that Rodrigo Bentancur is “feeling good” as he recovers at home after collapsing against Liverpool.

The Uruguayan collapsed awkwardly to the turf early on in the Carabao Cup semi-final triumph over Arne Slots’ Liverpool on August 7 and was treated by medical staff for 10 minutes on the park, with the game delayed as he received oxygen before being stretchered off and rushed to hospital for treatment. The frightening scenes were later described as “distressing” by ex-Celtic boss Ange, whilst Bentancur took to social media to reassure fans from hospital that he was recovering.

And speaking to Spurs’ website, the Aussie gaffer said that Bentancur now faces a spell on the sidelines as he revealed what caused the worrying collapse. When asked for an update, he said: “It’s good news thankfully, he was in hospital obviously and they did all the tests in terms of checking that everything was okay. And yeah, it’s all good. He’s back home and he’s fine, feeling good. We’ll follow the protocols now, I think it’s a couple of weeks where you’ve got to make sure that everything is okay. Thankfully it looks like a concussion, but nothing more than that.

“It was distressing and you saw Pedro (Porro) was the first one there, it was a distressing situation but I thought the lads handled it well and medical team handled it well, so thankfully all good.” Posting on his Instagram page following the incident after partner Melany La Banca travelled to hospital to be with him, Bentancur said: “All good, guys! ” before showing his appreciation for the support he received, adding: “Thank you for the messages! Congratulations [for] the victory boys!!!” The message was posted with a picture of the pair smiling with their thumbs up.

Ange Postecoglou’s team rallied after Bentancur’s early injury and went on to secure a narrow 1-0 victory in the first-leg clash, with Lucas Bergvall netting the decisive goal, but the Aussie admitted his thoughts during the game were with his player after the incident telling Sky Sports: “It was pretty distressing at the time, seeing him go down like that, for the players. Dealing with adversity, these players just compose themselves and responded to it really well.”
