Plans to build two blocks of flats on a vacant plot of land in Johnstone have been submitted to Renfrewshire Council.

Architects have unveiled proposals for 14 one-bedroom homes and a small retail unit in the town’s Macdowall Street.

The bid for planning permission has been presented by Wilson Architects on behalf of property company Aslam Developments.

A design and access statement outlined how the development, if approved by the local authority, would take shape.

It said: “The first block will front onto Macdowall Street and will incorporate a small retail unit on the ground floor and six one-bedroom flats above.

“The second block will be positioned to the rear and will incorporate eight one-bedroom flats. Both blocks will be four storeys in height. The rear block will match the height of the consented block of flats on the adjacent land.

“The front block is marginally taller than the flats across the road, which is a three-storey tenemental property with traditionally taller floor to floor height.”

The site itself, which has lain empty for a number of years, is long and narrow – measuring at approximately 13.5 metres in width and 64 metres in length. It is located in a predominantly residential area, with a number of commercial businesses also found in close proximity.

The statement added: “We believe that the design proposals fit into the town centre location in Johnstone. The buildings are simple tenemental type buildings that are finished in robust materials that will stand the test of time.

“In terms of material usage, we have again looked at the surrounding buildings and incorporated similar materials into our façade. The new building has been designed with sustainability, environmental and ecological awareness in mind.

“It will provide high quality accessible and safe living in the heart of Johnstone.”

A decision will be made on the application at a later date.
