The Austin Police Department said it has identified persons of interest.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating after a December stabbing on Sixth Street resulted in a man’s death.

According to APD, the incident occurred on Dec. 14, 2024, in the 100 block of East 6th Street, near the intersection of Congress Avenue.

APD was notified by the Kyle Police Department in the early morning hours that the victim, identified as 19-year-old Leonard Akens, had been brought to a Hays County Hospital with stab wounds. Akens was pronounced dead just after 3 a.m.

Detectives discovered that the incident occurred after the victim’s group had gotten into an altercation with another group that continued to escalate leading up to the stabbing.

APD said it has identified persons of interest.

The incident is considered Austin’s 67th homicide of 2024.
