Brad Lyons reckons Kilmarnock produced one of their best performances in two seasons in their midweek goalless draw against Motherwell.

And he insists it was no coincidence it happened when Kyle Magennis returned to the starting line-up for the first time in 15 months.

A dominant display from the hosts, which included Lyons himself hitting the crossbar and having a goal ruled out for offside following a VAR check, was certainly a marked improvement on a dismal outing against Ross County a few days earlier.

But despite 21 shots and 15 corners, they were unable to find the net with the midfielder saying: “It was great to see Kyle Magennis back out there.

“He put in an unbelievable performance and he and Polworth were absolutely brilliant. That shows you how deep our squad is and hopefully if we can get more injured ones back we’ll be pushing right up to the end of the season.

“Kyle just showed the drive and energy he has and the way he drives forward and Polworth is so composed. He’ll always look for the ball. If you’re playing in wide areas or at the back you just always know he’s going to be there, he’s absolutely brilliant.

“That’s why we controlled the game against Motherwell – they controlled the midfield.”

He added: “This season, maybe last season, that was one of our most dominant performances from the start to the 90th minute so, there’s frustration written all over it that we couldn’t get it over the line.

“We need to be more composed in the final third. Goals win games and unfortunately we didn’t score. Points maybe at the moment don’t feel important but at the end of the season they are vital.

“How dominant we were and not to get three points was crazy. That’s the real frustrating part of the last two games.”
