Outlander fans were left in absolute awe of Sam Heughan after his latest scenes in the show.

Jaws were on the floor at the scenes from the last episode Written In My Heart’s Own Blood when Claire was shot in the stomach whilst helping the wounded soldiers.

Jamie rushed to her side in heartbreaking scenes and Outlander diehards were particularly delighted with Sam’s portrayal of Claire’s concerned husband – and took to Instagram to comment.

One penned: “Excellent performances!! I think I was holding my breath through the whole scene.”

Another said: “This man is one of the most talented actors in the world He is phenomenal and I can’t thank him enough for bringing James Fraser to life.”

One fan commented: “This is one of the most powerful scene of the entire show.”

Another fan wrote: “Give him. Every. Award. All of them. Line them up. And give them to him. I can’t stand the lack of recognition for his talent. He’s an outstanding actor.

While one said: “The man deserves an award for this performance. Seriously. This was SO GOOD. Straight out of the book & I LOVED IT!!!”

Elsewhere in the episode, Brianna (Sophie Skelton) gets one step closer to reuniting with Roger (Richard Rankin), although no one was prepared for their daughter Mandy (Rosa Morris) running off through the stones, potentially leading to another MacKenzie lost through time.

Sam has spoken out about his life after Outlander as filming for the eighth and final season wrapped last year.

He then poignantly reflected on how much the show has meant to him for over a decade.

“It’s been a huge part of my life,” he said. “So, I don’t know where I go from here.”

He then joked he could be about to join Al Roker, Craig Melvin and Dylan Reyer on the Today show.

“If you guys have got a spare seat…” he teased, sparking laughter from the hosts.

Craig quipped: “There are a couple of openings here!”

Unfortunately, he has no future acting projects confirmed just yet as his schedule has been packed with filming the seventh and eighth seasons of Outlander in quick succession.

However, he recently found success portraying Danny in the Channel 4 and Starz thriller The Couple Next Door, which some have speculated could return for a second season.

He has also appeared alongside his fellow Outlander star Graham McTavish in two seasons of Men In Kilts.

The first season saw the pair explore their heritage and culture in Scotland, while season two shook things up with a trip to New Zealand to trace their country’s surprising roots.
