The old Castle Douglas to Kirkcudbright branch-line was brought to life by Alan McLellan at a recent meeting of Kirkcudbright History Society.
Alan shared his enthusiasm with a packed church hall, as well as more than 60 others on Zoom from across the world.
He delivered a unique commentary of his experience of walking this line, as well as the Dumfries to Portpatrick line. His talk was illustrated with historical videos, including an excellent account of the journey of the last Kirkcudbright train in 1965 and an amazing, simulated video that took the audience on the train journey as if it was today. If only it had not been axed following the Beeching report it would have been a great asset for both local people and visitors.
Alan, a retired postman, had taken up this interest in railways after being diagnosed with prostate cancer and that makes his achievements and charity work even more outstanding. He is a true inspiration on overcoming the vicissitudes that life may bestow on us.
Further details and pictures of the Kirkcudbright railway can be found on the Kirkcudbright History Society website: www.kirkcudbrighthistorysociety.org.uk; the Kirkcudbright Railway.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 12 at 7.30pm in the Parish Church Hall, when David Henry will give a talk on the history of Kirkcudbright lifeboat entitled From Oars to Outboards. Members will be given an opportunity to donate to the Kirkcudbright Lifeboat Boathouse Appeal. Visitors (£3) are welcome both in the hall and on Zoom.
