An expert has sounded a health warning over using one ingredient in your airfryer over fears it could lead to contamination of your meal.

With the popular kitchen gadget now a staple in millions of homes thanks to its cost effective way of cooking, owners are being warned about seasoning the contents before or during the cooking process.

The advice comes as warnings over safe use of the appliances have been issued after Christmas, when they have been given as gifts. Cooks are being told never to use salt in the air fryer because of two risks.

Dr Richard Anderson, head of learning and development at High Speed Training who has more than 14 years experience in food hygiene and safety, warned that the seasoning in the drawer of the air fryer can destroy the lining of the appliance during the cooking process and that flecks of that lining can end up in your food as well.

He said: “Air fryers are incredibly convenient and are safer than traditional deep-frying, but like any kitchen appliance, they come with risks. Understanding the basics of air fryer safety can help to avoid accidents and keep your cooking stress-free.

“For the longevity of your air fryer, avoid seasoning food with salt whilst it is in the air fryer basket. Salt can break down the lining of the basket, which could pose a food safety issue, as the flecks of the lining could enter the food being cooked.”

He said, instead, you should always wait until your food is cooked before adding salt.

Other safety tips when using the kitchen favourite, are to ensure it is placed on a worktop and close to a socket.

Dr Anderson added: “If possible, you should keep the air fryer in a well-ventilated area of your kitchen, close to a vent hood and you should turn on the vent hood when using the air fryer. If it is not possible to use the air fryer in a well-ventilated area, ensure you open any windows while using it.”

He also warned about using an extension cord to power the appliance. He added: “You should plug your air fryer directly into the power socket and avoid using any extension cords.

“Extension cords can dip in power, which can cause faults in your air fryer.”
