Thinking about getting a dog but not sure where to begin? While many people are animal lovers, they often overlook the responsibilities of proper care.

Occasionally, new dog owners choose a breed without researching its specific needs, which can lead to an unpleasant experience for both the pet and the owner.

Each dog breed comes with its own unique behaviors, personalities, and requirements. Doing research or consulting with an expert who truly understands dogs is a great first step before making that commitment.

Veterinarian Amir Anwary recently shared his “brutally honest opinion” on TikTok, revealing five dog breeds he would never personally own, Express US reported. According to Amir, these breeds may pose unique challenges for owners and their households.

1. Daschund

“They can be a lovely breed, but they can also be very stubborn, bark the whole night and they can suffer really bad separation anxiety,” Amir began his video.

He also highlighted their tendency to become overweight and warned that they are prone to Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a spinal condition that can cause serious back problems.

2. French Bulldog

Next on Amir’s list is the French Bulldog. While they’re “cute and adorable”, they often face breathing issues or skin problems. “If it’s not those, then it’s back problems – and they are so expensive to own in the first place.”

He added: “As a vet, I see these all the time with so many different medical issues – I would not own one, ever.”

3. Belgian Malinois/Belgian Shepherd

“This is not a dog – it’s a machine,” Amir exclaimed. “It requires constant physical and mental stimulation – I work a full time job and there is no way I could give this dog the kind of attention it deserves to thrive.”

The vet warned the breed could become “destructive” if it feels unhappy and doesn’t thrive.

4. Border Collie

A somewhat unexpected pick, but Amir described the breed as “basically having ADHD” because of its relentless drive to “work.”

He explained: “They’re lovely, but they’re always on and requiring mental and physical stimulation – I could not possibly provide the stimulation that it needs to stay happy.”

5. Labrador

Labradors come as another surprise on Amir’s list. He mentioned that the breed is friendly but it is prone to becoming overweight. “They are also a breed that love to eat absolutely everything,” he said.

“They’re very food driven and if you’re a weak owner who likes to give out treats, you may find your Labrador rolling all over the place.”

The vet’s video quickly went viral, getting nearly two million views on TikTok within just 24 hours. One person agreed: “As a Border Collie owner I can honestly say I love them, but do NOT get them if you can’t provide lots of exercise daily!”

A second added: “I’ve had a Labrador mix and a Border Collie mix, I wouldn’t go for either breed again. It was so difficult keeping the Collie stimulated and exercised, and the Labrador couldn’t be trusted not to scavenge.”

While a third person added an extra caution, noting: “Very few people research the breed before getting a dog. They also don’t check with landlords, family members or finances. Sadly, dogs can’t live on love alone and should not be acquired on impulse.”

We couldn’t agree more with this advice. Bringing a pet into your life is a significant commitment, and thorough research is essential before making the leap. Your new four-legged companion will need plenty of time, training, and stimulation to thrive and be happy.
