Draughty windows in winter can see you heating bills soar as the warm air makes its escape forcing you to crank up the thermostat.
But many uPVC windows have a setting on them that can make them tighter when closed which, in turn, helps to eliminate draughts.
The little-known hack could see an end to heat escaping from your windows this winter and it’s a simple adjustment that anyone can do.
And the trick can them be used again in the summer to allow more ventilation in rooms when the warmer weather appears.
With warnings of more snow and bitterly cold temperatures on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to make your windows winter-proof.
Instagram user @interiorstyled_ informed her followers of the nifty trick
@interiorstyled said: “You’ll see a little notch at nine o’clock. That is the summer setting so how to adjust is with an alan key. Straight up 12 o’clock is neutral and round to three o’clock is the winter setting.
“When you close the window and pull the handle down it’s going to be tighter and therefore it’s now in the winter setting.”
In summer mode, the window sash opens from the top, allowing outside air to enter the room whereas in winter mode the window sash is closed.
The Instagram account holder added: “There appears to be conflicting opinions as to whether it’s a winter setting per se, but essentially the concept is by making minor adjustments to the cams you can retighten the seals and subsequently reduce heat loss.”
Followers were impressed though. One said: “Who cares what’s its called it’s the advice that’s helpful stop nit picking! Creator thank you for this top tip.”
Another added: “I never knew this! Why doesn’t anyone tell you?!”
