A Dumfries and Galloway forces charity is desperately looking for veterans to help back into work.

Southwest RNR has tens of thousands of pounds to put former service personnel through HGV training and on the path to a new career.

But it will lose the cash if it isn’t spent by the end of March.

Charity boss Robin Hood, who lives near Mossdale, said: “I have £30,000 but it needs to be spent by the end of March or else it goes back to the Scottish Government.

“They can do some of the training online at home, then they come to Dumfries and are trained at Nithcree.

“It’s a 10 day course and we put them up in a bed and breakfast. All they have to do is turn up.

“The salary for a lorry driver is about £38,000 so it is not to be sneezed at.

“Dumfries and Galloway Council has the money and then pay it to Nithcree as and when it is needed.”

Southwest RNR has so far helped more than 80 veterans back into work.

To qualify for the course, the person must live in Dumfries and Galloway, be unemployed and have been in the regular services or Territorial Army.

They cannot have more than six points on their licence and they can live anywhere in the region from Langholm to Stranraer.

B&B accommodation will be provided while they do their training at Nithcree.

Anyone interested should contact Jo Edkins at Nithcree on 01387 256528.
