Central Scotland list MSP Richard Leonard is asking the Scottish Parliament to recognise the “outstanding contribution” of Mick Lynch on his retirement as General Secretary of the RMT union.
MSPs are being asked to welcome the “victories achieved by Mick for transport and energy workers and the travelling public” and agree that “he leaves the RMT in a strong position to continue to represent and advocate for its members and to build a fairer society”.
Richard Leonard, who is also the convenor of the RMT’s cross-party Scottish parliamentary group, said: “Mick Lynch is a working class hero.
“Not only as a highly effective representative of rail workers, but as a leading voice for a better world and for socialism.
“I wish him the long, healthy and happy retirement that he richly deserves.”
Mr Lynch, 63, became general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers in 2021, and under his leadership the union staged a series of strikes over pay in 2022 and 2023, culminating in a deal with the new Labour government this summer.
Mr Lynch did not give a reason for standing down but said it had “been a privilege to serve this union for over 30 years in all capacities”, adding it was now “time for change”.
