A woman from Castle Douglas is getting ready to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Kathleen Galletly Preston (nee Maxwell), who now lives in Cape Town in South Africa, will reach the milestone on Saturday.

Born in Castle Douglas on January 18, 1925, she is the daughter of John Hunter Maxwell – who was the owner of The Galloway News at the time.

She went to Kirkcudbright Academy before training as a physical education teacher in Liverpool and teaching in Shropshire.

She then studied in London to become a physiotherapist and returned to Scotland before heading to East London, South Africa.

She had planned to stay for a year but then met Peter, who would become her husband.

She set up her own physiotherapy practice and specialised in supporting children with scoliosis and adults with back issues.

She has two daughters, with Fiona living in Australia and Patricia living in England, while her son Andrew lives in Cape Town.
