Months of roadworks are set to cause misery for motorists in Dumfries.

And it will also see the Dumfries bypass completely closed on three separate occasions.

Work is set to begin on replacing barriers between the Cuckoo Bridge and Bloomfield roundabouts at the end of January and continue to the end of April.

Temporary traffic lights, single lane closures, 30 mile per hour speed limits and average speed cameras are all in store while Amey is carrying out the work.

And the three closures of the A75 will lead to traffic from the busy Euroroute being diverted through Dumfries town centre.

An Amey spokeswoman said: “This scheme will benefit vehicles using this route each day, by improving the safety of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.”

Work is scheduled to begin on Sunday, January 26. Each night from January 28 until the scheduled completion date of April 28, there will be single lane closures and temporary traffic lights from 7pm to 6am.

The pedestrian footpath will be closed from March 16 until April 28, with temporary crossing points installed.

During this stage of the work there will be a 30mph speed limit on this stretch of the A75, which will be enforced by average speed cameras.

And between January 26 and 28, March 16 and 17 and April 27 and 28 the section of road will be completely shut between 7pm and 6am each night.

Traffic heading east will turn off the A75 at Cuckoo Bridge roundabout onto Glasgow Road, which becomes Glasgow Street, then turn onto Buccleuch Street. They will follow it through Church Crescent and Academt Street before turning onto Edinburgh Road and back onto the A75 at Bloomfield Roundabout.

Westbound traffic will take the same route in reverse.
