We’re tracking an increasing potential for winter weather next week with snow being the most likely culprit.

AUSTIN, Texas — An Arctic cold front moving through Central Texas will bring the coldest air of the winter so far.

After tracking the latest model trends, we’ve issued Weather Impact Alert Days for Monday through Wednesday morning due to hard freezes. The chance for winter weather is also becoming more likely for Monday into Tuesday.

Here’s a timeline and what we’re tracking:

Hard freezes to start

High could barely get into the 40s for next week, but lows will be in the mid-to-upper 20s. Temperatures in the teens are likely in some spots, especially in the Hill Country.

With that in mind, remember to protect pets, plants, pipes and people. Keep your pets inside, keep your larger outdoor plants, and exposed outdoor pipes, covered and be sure to check on your elderly neighbors to make sure they’re warm.

Winter weather possibilities

We’re tracking the increasing possibility of winter weather in Central Texas between Monday afternoon and evening, into Tuesday morning and afternoon. Models have been trending towards mainly snow, but we can’t rule out sleet or freezing rain.

The models above are “deterministic” models, which are only one singular model run. However, we have relied on “ensemble” model runs, which combine multiple iterations of a given model to estimate the probability of snowfall in Central Texas.

The latest European model data has a 50-50 shot for at least an inch of snow for Austin and our Central Texas counties. The American GFS ensembles show around a 40% chance of at least an inch of snow.

However, we are not locking in any winter weather at this point. While the possibility is increasing to start next week, we do not expect any impacts similar to the deadly February 2021 winter storm.

Bottom line

While a few hard freezes next week are likely, along with the possibility of winter weather, models can still trend in a different direction. That could make winter weather impacts more or less likely. With that, it’s important to check back with KVUE for updates as the event gets closer.
