BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – As temperatures reach the single digits tomorrow, the West Virginia Emergency Management Division is asking folks to remember the 4 P’s.

In this winter weather it’s important to prioritize People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants. A Public Information Officer with the Division, Lora Lipscomb, tells us that you should keep yourself, your pets and plants indoors if possible, and check on your neighbors, family and friends.

If animals cannot be brought inside, make sure they are out of the cold and in a warm area, with plenty of food and unfrozen water.

Lipscomb also explained that for plants that cannot be brought indoors, draping a sheet over them can help prevent freezing. Faucets should be turned on to drip water to help keep the pipes from freezing, and opening cabinets under sinks to expose them to heated house air can help as well.

“Stay inside if possible, and I know that’s not always possible, so if you can stay inside, bring your pets and your plants inside, watch out for those pipes, especially at night, and let them drip, and watch out for your neighbors and your loved ones,” said Lipscomb.

Lipscomb says, to check out winter-related and other resources in your area, go to WV211. For updated information on road conditions, you can view WV511 here.
