A man suffered serious head injuries when he was shoved to the ground during a row outside a Motherwell pub.

The incident led to first offender Cameron McGowan, 22, appearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted assaulting Adrian Gibson to his severe injury and permanent impairment by pushing him and causing him to fall in Muir Street.

It happened shortly after 2am on December 9, 2023 when McGowan, of Green Gardens, Cleland, and Mr Gibson had an argument.

Daisy Bentley, prosecuting, said: “The accused pushed Mr Gibson who fell and hit the back of his head on the pavement.

“The accused went immediately to help him as did pub door staff.”

The court heard Mr Gibson was taken to hospital where he was treated for a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain.

The fiscal added: “An update on his condition from August last year states that he still had issues with his balance, smell, taste and eyesight.

“When questioned about the incident, the accused told police officers ‘I didn’t mean any malice. He called me a name and I just shoved him away from me’.”

Defence lawyer Eddie Robertson said McGowan had never been in trouble before.

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment.
