Like the rest of the country, I’ve been utterly engrossed in the current series of The Traitors on BBC One. From the get-go, we’ve been treated to a rollercoaster of unexpected plot twists, with Fozia, Alexander and Jack being the first to fall within the opening ten minutes.
I’m personally gutted that only three episodes remain, and its departure will certainly leave a void in our hearts. However, as much as I adore the show, I feel the BBC is missing a trick to inject an additional layer of suspense into next year’s series.
BBC, if you’re tuned in, in a game teeming with deceit, lies and manipulation, the eliminated contestants shouldn’t be permitted to bow out so effortlessly.
As loyal viewers are aware, each episode includes a roundtable discussion where suspicions about potential Traitors are voiced. The players then jot down their suspect on a small blackboard before unveiling their choice sequentially.
The person who garners the most votes then rises, reveals whether they’re a Faithful or a Traitor, and is exiled from the castle for good. But imagine the heightened drama if, unbeknownst to the Faithfuls, the ousted star hasn’t actually departed, reports the Express.
During the nightly Traitors meeting, the banished Faithful should make a surprise return, giving the unsuspecting Traitors the fright of their lives.
For the contestants, it would be a revelation as it would confirm the identities of the Traitors, putting all their doubts to bed.
In a final act of retaliation, they should have the opportunity to make a case to the Traitors for one of their co-stars whom they believe should be eliminated that night.
Of course, the Traitors are not obliged to heed the suggestion, but viewers would get a glimpse into how they feel about their friends who may have deceived them.
Frequently, those closest to each other in the game will have to betray one another, taking treachery to an unprecedented level in the castle.
The ultimate betrayal this series saw Maia voting her sister Armani out of the show before being eliminated by the ruthless Traitors that night. Murder, banishment, lies, manipulation and treachery – why not introduce an element of revenge to the game?
It’s yet to be determined whether the Traitors or Faithfuls will secure the substantial cash prize, but one thing is certain, this series of The Traitors will go down in history.
The Traitors continues on Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
