A man has appeared in court charged with wilful fireraising and serious assault after a blaze in Cambuslang.

Mark Gray, 34, made no plea or declaration when he appeared on petition in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court in connection with the incident in Mill Road on Thursday, January 16.

Gray, of Cambuslang, is facing 10 separate charges which include wilful fireraising, assault to severe injury, assaulting or impeding police, carrying an offensive weapon, racially aggravated harassment, vandalism and threatening behaviour.

Gray was committed for further examination and remanded in custody pending his next appearance within eight days.

Police were alerted to the scene just after 4pm on Thursday and two women, aged 41 and 16, were rushed to hospital for treatment.

The force said they were later released from the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

A fundraiser launched for the family affected by the fire has reached nearly £5,000.

The community has since come together to support the family by backing the fundraiser set up by Robert Kennedy, who wrote: “After the horrific events of last night which am sure most will know a family has lost all of their belongings in the house fire which has been a traumatic time for a mother and her kids.

“We’ve set this gofundme up in the hope that all of the community can come together to help them get through these terrible times and put some clothes on their backs.

“Every little bit will help them in a big way.”

Thanking members of the public and the emergency services for their efforts yesterday, Detective Inspector Gary Smillie said: “I would again like to extend my thanks to nearby residents who were impacted by this incident for their patience and co-operation and the other emergency services for their support.”
