“It’s good to acknowledge at least this history behind the day and what he’s done for our community to be able to get us to this point.”

GEORGETOWN, Texas — On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Central Texans honored the life of the late American civil rights activist. Even in the cold, Central Texans in Georgetown honored the civil rights leader’s legacy on Monday.

A march was held at the Williamson County Courthouse as members of the community marched seven blocks to the Macedonia Baptist Church where an indoor service was held to honor King.

One woman who came all the way from North Texas told KVUE what MLK Day means to her.

“It’s a day to remember a very powerful, a very memorable Black figure in our history, and I think it’s a day to celebrate,” she said. “Even if you don’t come out here and do something like this, it’s good to acknowledge at least this history behind the day and what he’s done for our community to be able to get us to this point. To be able to be out here and protest and be able to have this kind of speech, it’s very powerful.”

MLK Day is the only federal holiday that’s a National Day of Service, encouraging all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities.

Other MLK Day marches scheduled for Monday across Central Texas were canceled or postponed due to the cold weather.

Bastrop County held its celebration and presentation indoors at the Bastrop Convention Center, while Leander moved its march inside at the Leander Activity Center.

Austin’s MLK Day Community Festival will now be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Huston-Tillotson University.
