This year Burns Night falls on a Saturday, marking the 265th anniversary of the birth date of Scotland’s most famous poet, Robert Burns ‘The Bard’.

Celebrated the world over and a life much storied, Burns wrote hundreds of poems and folk songs, and what better way to pay tribute than to raise a glass with something good?

Currently you can get a £110 bottle of Talisker Special Release for £48 on Amazon, a whopping discount of 56%. This single malt scotch whisky is a limited edition and it’s easy to see why.

Its tasting notes include “rich, robust flavours” which they say have gained “rounded, fruity notes from subtle finishing, which embrace but do not tame the classic Talisker character”. This dram is best served neat, just splash 50ml into a whisky glass and sit back to sip and savour it.

It isn’t just a solitary drink, though, you can share it in a group setting with friends and family if you’re after a bit of collective appreciation. But, equally, given it’s a special release too, it could be one to add to the collection.

So far, it has a 4.2 average out of five-star rating on Amazon from 60 reviews. One reviewer conjured it up perfectly by writing: “This is a great expression that really sums up the seas crashing against rocks in a bottle, love that sea spray finish, a bottle for special friends or a special occasion”.

Another happy buyer said it is “an absolutely cracking young single malt”. Someone else noted: “Firstly I’ve seen people say about taste a lot of cask strength are not for everyone. If too strong add a little water brings out the flavour without losing all that strength. A good buy in my opinion. Tastes lovely and at this price amazing value.”

One buyer didn’t rave, adding: “The reality in the glass and in the mouth is somewhat different. There is none of the intensity depth or complexity or finish that cask strength should bring. Indeed, the only thing that I can find to recommend this is that it is balanced and does pull off a very difficult cask challenge.”

You won’t be short of variety if you want to shop around. Tesco has The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky for £35. You can also get a bit of a few different whisky worlds if you like and opt for something like this really nifty Regions of Scotland whisky tasting set from Master of Malt, which is £30.95 online.
