When considering which dog breed to adopt, it’s crucial to understand their unique habits and behaviors. Each breed comes with its own set of behavioral traits, meaning that different breeds require different types of training and approaches to ensure a happy and healthy relationship with their new owners.
Rachel Rodgers, founder of Nose to Trail, a service focused on improving canine behavior and strengthening the bond between dogs and their owners, has shared her expert insights on the five dog breeds that require the least amount of walking, Express reports.
In collaboration with Napo Pet Insurance, Rodgers, who was named Clinical Animal Behaviourist of the Year for 2023 and 2024, explained: “Certain dog breeds are naturally less active and need minimal exercise.”
Rodgers, also a founding member of The Canine School of Trailing, pointed out that smaller and toy breeds typically demand less physical activity.
For those seeking a low-maintenance walking routine, breeds like French Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are ideal choices.
Rachel explained that French Bulldogs are “known for their low energy levels” and are “happy with short play sessions or light strolls”.
Chihuahuas, for instance, “can stay active with indoor play and brief outdoor outings”, while Shih Tzus are” content with short walks and plenty of companionship”.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, known for their gentle nature, prefer relaxed, leisurely strolls.
Rachel added: “Rescuing an older dog who requires less exercise may be a better option than taking on a puppy.”
In a surprising twist, Rodgers pointed out that retired greyhounds are another breed to consider. Despite their racing background, they often need far less exercise than one might assume.
Rachel elaborated: “They’re often happy with a quick walk around the block and a short burst of off-lead time in a private hire field.”
Greyhounds will still crave “mental stimulation and interaction to stay happy and healthy”.
According to her, puzzle toys and scent work training is the best way to provide mental stimulation to the dog.
