BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – An inmate at a McDowell County prison was sentenced to one year for possessing a weapon, according to the Department of Justice.

According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), in October 2023, a staff member at FCI McDowell conducted a random search of 24-year-old Savion Garcia’s prison cell. During the search, the DOJ said the staff member found two “shanks” with Garcia.

The DOJ said Garcia admitted to owning the shanks, and also admitted that they were going to be used as weapons.

Garcia was sentenced to one year in prison, which will be followed by three years of supervised release, for possession of a weapon by an inmate at a federal prison.
